YARD WASTE HANDLING

Spring, Summer, Fall

During three seasons throughout the year, yard waste is picked up weekly on Tuesdays between March 15 and December 15. The leaf vac operates only during specified periods, specifically the Spring and Fall as noted below.

Yard Waste Handling Guidelines

Yard waste should be set out for pick up as follows:

  • Use brown yard waste bags — any brand, or plastic bins or totes NO HEAVIER THAN 40 LBS.

  • Do not use plastic bags of any color.

  • Bundle limbs up to 48" with twine.

  • Pack small sticks into a yard waste bag.

  • Do not leave material loosely piled by the side of the road. It will not be picked up.

Paul Gondeck can provide assistance to homeowners with landscape headaches (such as fallen tree limbs) at the homeowner’s expense. Arrangements should be made directly with him.

Spring Cleanup

During this time the Town’s maintenance crew will vacuum leaves and pick up other over-winter debris. Spring, Summer, Fall Yard Waste Handling Guidelines (above) apply.

The leaf vac will begin service April 1 and will continue throughout the month of April.

Leaf piles should be set out as follows:

  • Keep leaf piles within four feet of the edge of the road so the vacuum hose can reach them.

  • Consider the locations of trees and parked cars when creating leaf piles. These obstacles obstruct the free movement of the hose.

  • Do not blow leaves into wooded areas adjacent to your home. Accumulating leaf debris can create a fire hazard.

  • Wetting down leaf piles will help to keep the leaves from blowing around until they are picked up.

  • To avoid risking damage to the machinery, separate branches and limbs from leaves.

  • Small sticks can be bundled with twine or placed in brown yard waste bags.

  • Limbs 4’ or shorter should be tied up with twine and set out by the side of the road.

  • Sticks and small limbs will be picked up separately from leaves.

Fall Leaf Pickup

Service begins in mid-October on an as-needed basis and increases in frequency in response to leaf volume. It continues through mid-December unless hindered by a significant snowfall, when weather conditions may require early suspension of work in order to properly store the equipment for winter. Ideally, residents should have all raking done by the evening of December 1 to help ensure pickup by the final week of service.

Set out leaf piles following Spring Leaf Pickup guidelines.

Prohibited Yard Waste Disposal

Disposing of yard waste, building materials, or any other refuse type is prohibited in wooded areas by Ordinance No. 2021-02C. Signs are posted; fines do apply.

Playground

Use of the playground is open to all residents and visitors.
Hours are posted.
Please park in assigned space.

Utilities

Utility easements exist for some properties within the Town. Homeowners are encouraged to contact the LaPorte County Recorders office to find out whether an easement will be impacted by any property improvement project.
